Maxor National Pharmacy Services, LLC (“Maxor”), today announced that Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. has now included Maxor Specialty, comprised of IV Solutions and Pharmaceutical Specialties (“PSI”), in its specialty pharmacy network. Effectively immediately, patients may now utilize Maxor Specialty for Orkambi® and Kalydeco®, two leading medications used in the treatment of certain types of Cystic Fibrosis (“CF”).
Rare Disease Day, launched in Europe in 2008, is held the last day of February every year and seeks to raise awareness of the impact that rare or orphan diseases have on the lives of patients and those who care for them. The USA joined the campaign in 2009 and over 80 countries throughout the world participated in 2016. The theme for 2017 is “RESEARCH” and the slogan is “With research, possibilities are limitless.”
Both pharmaceutical manufacturers and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) have come under scrutiny lately. Manufacturers are accused of excessively increasing prices for existing drugs, and PBMs are accused of being the middle man responsible for reaping profits from these price increases while the consumer and employer, amongst others, are left “holding the bag.”
So why would I recently leave a leadership role in one of the top pharmacies in the country to work for a PBM? It is simple.
Science continually opens windows and doors, offering insight into diseases and conditions and how to cure or at least manage them. Pharmaceutical companies invest heavily in research, particularly for common diseases. Rare diseases are often neglected, to the point where they are also known as “orphan diseases.”
As part of an initiative to provide better tools to MaxorPlus members, we are proud to announce the new member portal. The new portal has all of the great features that were part of the previous portal, but with new and exciting features. We understand that being able to access your prescriptions, user account information, medication history, and other medical information online is crucial. The upgraded user experience will allow members easier access to all of the MaxorPlus services to help make managing pharmacy benefits that much easier.
If you're like most people, you've probably got an entire cabinet or plastic bin full of old medications. They've either expired or you're no longer required to take them. If you're thinking about disposing of those medications, it will benefit you to read through this post to make sure that you are disposing of them properly.
